Although the first more or less successful attempts to record and reproduce sound are attributed to the names of the famous American Thomas Edison and the not-so-famous Frenchman Charles Cros, perhaps the main revolution in this area was made by Emile Berliner. He invented both a gramophone that was more advanced than Edison's phonograph, and was the first to invent a convenient and lightweight music medium that could be read by his previous invention - the gramophone. However, you can read more about this in our other article dedicated to foreign discs. In the same article, you will learn about the records that were created in our country.
It is the company named after its founder, "Emil Berliner", that has the honor of creating the first record with a song in Ukrainian. This happened in 1899 in London. The record recorded the performance, ironically, by a Russian choir, of an excerpt from "Zaporozhets za Dunayem", one of the most famous Ukrainian operas. He soon recorded several more Ukrainian folk songs. These records, of course, have not survived to our time.
Mass production of records successfully coincided with the Ukrainian national upsurge, during which books and the press began to be printed en masse in the Ukrainian language, their own printing houses and textbooks appeared. It was a time when the intelligentsia actively turned to folk art. So Lesya Ukrainka organized an all-Ukrainian campaign in 1908-09 with the aim of making a series of recordings of the work of kobzars. 4 years before that, the first records created in our country were released. These were folk songs performed by the opera singer Anna Krushelnytska, the sister of the legendary Solomiya.
From 1911 to 1919, the first factory for the production of domestic vinyl records "Extrafon" operated in Kyiv. Its founder was the Czech entrepreneur Jindrich Jindrichek. With the Bolsheviks coming to power in the capital of Ukraine, the factory was closed. In the second half of the 20th century, the famous "Melody" was created, including a branch in Kyiv. As was usually the case in the USSR, it united all independent recording studios, becoming a monopolist.

Records in Ukraine began to be produced quite quickly after their creation by Emil Berliner. They contributed to the flowering of Ukrainian culture since their appearance at the beginning of the 20th century. There are countless folk songs that were recorded on newfangled records, including those featuring Ukrainian stars of the time. Unfortunately, the Bolshevik occupation of our country put a pause on the development of Ukrainian recording, although there was a department of the all-Union "Melody" in Kyiv. Many of the records that you can find in the Fama online store were created by this company, although not only by it. A vinyl disc of your favorite artist is a great idea for a gift to your friends and family.
