The first music player was invented back in 1857. More precisely, the phonograph, as this device was called, was a sound recording device, you can't listen to music from it. However, its value was not in this, but in the fact that this successful experiment turned out to be the foundation on which Alexander Bell's telephone and Thomas Edison's phonograph arose. The last device, which was released 20 years after the invention of the phonograph, was already the first real music player.
The phonograph was such a revolutionary device that during the first demonstrations of its work, presenters could be threatened with imprisonment or beatings. It was so hard for people to believe that some soulless thing could reproduce the human voice that they suspected fraud.
And 10 years later, the American Emil Berliner invented the gramophone, which had another amazing innovation - discs. They were easy and relatively cheap to replicate, so in 1895 Berliner gave rise to Berliner Gramophone - the first record sales company in history. And 2 years later, a branch was opened in the United Kingdom, which would later become one of the main players in sound recording - EMI.

So gradually, with each new technological improvement, discs and players became more accessible to the mass consumer. As a result, they became an indispensable item in almost every home, but they acquired a special cult status in the USSR, where vinyl records by foreign artists were almost the only opportunity to peek behind the Iron Curtain. Albums by Western artists, at least those that were allowed by censorship, were sold in large quantities in the republics of the Union.
