Wine decanter
Would you like to have a magic recipe that would turn an inexpensive bottle of wine, bought in a hurry before the arrival of guests, into a drink with a sophisticated and interesting taste? We are convinced that such a secret would save many wine "lovers" from embarrassment in front of "connoisseurs". We are happy to announce that it is real - of course, port wine from a cardboard package will not save anything, but just a good inexpensive wine or varieties with a specific taste can play with new shades. All this is possible thanks to decanting.
What are decanters for?
Wine decanters are sometimes considered not really necessary accessories, serving more for aesthetics than practicality and utility. But, in fact, it is just that important utilitarian object, which is successfully implemented in attractive stylish designs.
«Decanting» as such means pouring wine from its original bottle into another vessel, from which the drink is poured into glasses. This process has the following advantages:
-
The wine is separated from the sediment. The older the wine, the greater the likelihood of sediment forming in the bottle, which is completely natural, but has a bitter, intense taste.
-
The taste of wine is revealed by contact with oxygen. Wine "breathes". Corked aromas and flavors become brighter and can acquire new shades. Oxygen also softens the taste of tannins in red wines, which cause the astringency of the drink. -
By pouring wine into a new container, you can clear the liquid of cork crumbs if it crumbled when opening the bottle. For the perfect result, a funnel with a strainer is also used to filter out the smallest particles.
Sediment is almost always formed in red wines older than 5 years, and very rarely in white wines. Therefore, it is easy to remember which wines should be decanted to get rid of the sediment. Specifically, red wines with an intense bouquet - Malbec, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Burgundy, Bordeaux - benefit the most from a decanter.
With oxygen access to the drink, things are a bit more complicated. Most likely, 15-30 minutes is quite enough time to reveal the aromas in the wine without harming the taste. Young, rich wines with a lot of tannins need more time. But with older (and more expensive) wines, you need to be more careful - too much airing can oxidize the wine excessively and destroy the unique bouquet formed by many years of aging.
What types of decanters are there, what to choose and how to use them correctly?
Traditionally decanters were made of glass in the shape of a vase or jug with a wider base, a narrow neck and a wider neck. This form provides sufficient but not excessive access of oxygen to the liquid, and also allows sediment to remain on the bottom or walls of the vessel. But such classic examples of vessels have a fairly typical modest appearance.
More modern models of decanters can be made of crystal, glass, silver and other materials, and most importantly, they can boast the most unexpected shapes and decorations. Such wine accessories not only perform their direct practical function, but also act as an independent decoration of the table and interior. Thanks to the development of technology, even classic glass wine decanters are made in a shape resembling a duck, a swan or something abstract and with an invariably elongated upper part.
In order for decanting to make sense and give a pleasant result, you must follow a simple algorithm:
- If the bottle of wine was stored horizontally, make sure it will be vertically for a day before use.
- Open the bottle using a store-bought corkscrew.
- Tilt the neck of the bottle towards the decanter so that the bottom of the bottle is at an angle of no more than 45 degrees. This will keep the liquid flowing slowly and prevent any sediment from becoming cloudy.
- Slowly pour the wine into the decanter, watching for sediment. If you notice sediment, level the bottle, wait a minute, and continue slowly pouring the wine into the decanter.
- Do not empty the bottle completely, leave about a centimeter of liquid at the bottom along with the sediment.
