Cartography has been formed over millennia. And the first stage on this long path of development was the period of Ancient Times – the first world civilizations and antiquity.
In ancient times, when the ancient Greeks measured the size of the Earth, the world map of Claudius Ptolemy appeared, on which the degree grid (parallels and meridians) was first used. Until this time, namely the 2nd century AD, no one had yet compiled such maps.\

The urgent need for a map forced man to create the first cartographic drawings even before the invention of writing and the appearance of the wheel. The map began to play an important role in the life of society, which it retains to this day.
This would not have happened if the still completely new cartographic thought had not received that powerful charge of information, ideas and achievements of the sages of the Ancient East and Egypt, the first scientists of Greece and Rome, which already made the decline of cartography impossible and guaranteed its further development as a science.
The more people traveled, the richer their ideas about space became, the more accurate and large-scale the graphic images of the terrain became. Sailors and travelers most vividly embodied the primordial desire of people for romantic adventures and the search for the unknown.
Traveling is always a discovery. Traveling, we discover the world for ourselves, and ourselves - world.
