The tradition of giving gifts existed in primitive society. Ancient people worshiped pagan gods and made ritual offerings of flowers, fruits or animals. In this way, they tried to appease higher powers so that they would bring good luck in fishing or hunting, ward off bad weather and protect from floods or hurricanes.
One of the first holidays, information about which has been preserved, – Saturnalia, a December holiday in honor of the ancient Italian god of agriculture, Saturn. At this time, agricultural work was completed, and social life stopped: schoolchildren were released from school, and slaves - from work. In connection with the end of the harvest, everyone wanted rest and fun. On this day, the ancient Romans exchanged gifts - wax candles and dough figures. Later, Saturnalia was timed to coincide with the New Year and Christmas celebrations.

Another ancient holiday, celebrated for over five thousand years, is Navruz. The peoples of Central Asia celebrate it on March 21, the day of the vernal equinox. Navruz is translated from Farsi as "new day". The holiday symbolizes the renewal of man and nature, as well as the birth of everything new. In the week before Navruz, ancestors are commemorated and offerings are made to them, and on the holiday day, people sing songs, dance and give each other gifts.
One of the main Slavic holidays - the Birth of the Sun or Kolyada. In pagan mythology, Kolyada was the embodiment of the change of the annual cycle and the victory of good over evil spirits. On December 21, the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, was celebrated. The Slavs lit a bonfire, danced around it and sang carols with wishes for well-being. People exchanged korovaya and pies. After the adoption of Christianity, the customs of Kolyada were preserved during the celebration of Christmas Eve.
